The Golden Hour

Author
William Nicholson
Genre
Review

The Golden Hour is William Nicholson's third novel set in and around the fictional Sussex of Edenfield. It picks up plot strands from the previous two books - some of them colourful, others darker toned - and weaves them with new ones to create a pattern that is as varied and surprising as ever. But readers of all three books will notice a subtle change of tone as well. The Secret Intensity of Everyday Life and All the Hopeful Lovers were carefully detailed - there was a sense of diligent world-building about them, of every part of the canvas being filled in. ..read more

Trial by Fire

Genre
Review

The second in the YA ‘Raisied by wolves' series. The heroine has aged a couple of years and, despite being a non-shapeshifting human, has her own pack.

A satisfactory build on the previous novel, but I thought the introduction of the psychic coven a little convenient. Still however an easy to read writing style, good characters and some surprising plot twists.

Interesting to see where the next book goes.

Raised by Wolves

Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Genre
Review

A werewolf novel for the younger reader (the heroine, Bryn, is fifteen), or the younger at heart. Interesting concept of the orphaned human child raised by shape-shifting werewolves, and the detail of the pack way of life is well thought out and absorbing.

The heroine is, of course, feisty and the story as she finds out the circumstances of her adoption and falls in love, make for a very good read.

The plot has some surprising twists, particularly at the end and some good subsidiary characters, but the love interest is pale and the pace at time too frantic.

Lost Christmas

Review

I read "Lost Christmas" in 4 hours as I found it very difficult to put down. David Logan has written a brilliant book for the 10+ age group with Goose(Richard) being the central character of the story with Anthony and Frank being the others - we know who Frank is - but who is Anthony and why doesn't he know he's Anthony?

The Abused Werewolf Rescue Group

Catherine Jinks
Genre
Review

The Abused Werewold Rescue Group is a very funny book with Tobias Vandevelde (Toby) being slap bang in the middle of the action. Catherine Jinks has very cleverly told the story from Toby's very bemused point of view with excellent dialogue to go with the action.

The plot starts of slowly but builds up fairly quickly to a page turning story which I enjoyed very much with it's many laugh out loud moments.

A good teenage urban fantasy to recommend.

The Maharajah's Monkey: A Kit Salter Adventure

Author
Natasha Narayan
Genre
Review

Natasha Narayan in my eyes can do no wrong - she is simply put - a brilliant writer who draws us into her story from the word go.

I love the way in which she invokes a strong and very colourful Victorian era with her cast of characters. She never disappoints and I find all her books real page turners making you want to look out for Kit Salter and her friends on what ever adventures and country they land up in - in this care India. Natasha brings in all the colour and culture of the period with great aplomb.

The Book of Bones

Review

High adventure of the very best sort - this time Kit Salter, her friends and Aunt Hilda are in China on a quest for the Book of Bones. Again we have the Baker Brothers creating mayhem and leading everyone up and down the mountain path, and in this case quite literally.

What is different in this story is that we see Kit struggling with illness - either from a bug or a terrible evil from the Darkness in Shambala. Can she survive and recover from it?

Again adventures taking in the local culture of the period with in some cases death defying action!

All the Hopeful Lovers

Author
William Nicholson
Genre
Review

In his previous novel, The Secret Intensity of Everyday Life, William Nicholson introduced readers to the fictional village of Edenfield and to the lives of its various inhabitants. He evoked all their quiet yearnings, quotidian frustrations, petty jealousies and spontaneous acts of decency in a style that's rarely, if ever, found in the modern English novel: a kind of knowing, sharp-eyed tenderness.

Review

I found the characters and story line of Strange Angels O.K. with the Prologue and the first two chapters being very good. However after that the story for me was too slow and boring and I lost interest after that which was a pity because I love anything to do with vampires!

Review

Tommy Storm is a very exciting and unexpected book, especially the end!

Some parts of it are funny and some are sad especailly when one of the characters dies, but mostly it's full of twists and turns.

I could read this book again and again and would defintiely recommend it.
