The History Keepers

Author
Damion Dibben
Genre
Review

Jake D'Jones is a seemingly normal teenager with slightly eccentric parents and a lost older brother. The he gets kidnapped and find out that his parents are part of a secret time travelers society. His subsequent adventures, getting to know his fellow travelers, and trying to find his parents, make engrossing reading.

Clear to read, with historical facts and backgrounds as a bonus, this is a enjoyable, humorous escapist action novel, and the start of a series which has to be good news.

Succubus Revealed

Review

Although I started off a little confused as this is the end of a series, I soon caught up with what was happening. The characters and story were easy to follow, however it became a little frustrating towards then end, when it became obvious what was happening, but the characters still had no idea what was going on. But this may be because I am a little older than the target age group, and so cottoned on to the plot a little quicker.

These are books aimed at the young adult market (with yet more girls as heroines - where are all the boys in this genre ?) based on the Norse sagas with an idiomatic northern language twist, but don't attempt this if you haven't read, and enjoyed, Runemarks, the first in the series !

Review

OK, so Long Reach is a book that is aimed at the slightly older teen market of about 14+ and.. mostly at boys... BUT if you are like me, a girl that craves books that are dark, adventurous, gritty and a little bit squirmy to read, then you'll love this.

Genre
Review

This is a very good story written for older children with a very strong message about life and the consequences of your actions.

Jack is the main character and he believes in luck with the flick of a coin. Nicola Morgan has written the story in two slighly different ways so that the reader can flick a coin and read the version the coin depicts, or read both versions and pick the one that they enjoyed most which I am sure most readers will do.

Trial by Fire

Review

The second in the YA ‘Raisied by wolves' series. The heroine has aged a couple of years and, despite being a non-shapeshifting human, has her own pack.

A satisfactory build on the previous novel, but I thought the introduction of the psychic coven a little convenient. Still however an easy to read writing style, good characters and some surprising plot twists.

Interesting to see where the next book goes.

Raised by Wolves

Author
Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Genre
Review

A werewolf novel for the younger reader (the heroine, Bryn, is fifteen), or the younger at heart. Interesting concept of the orphaned human child raised by shape-shifting werewolves, and the detail of the pack way of life is well thought out and absorbing.

The heroine is, of course, feisty and the story as she finds out the circumstances of her adoption and falls in love, make for a very good read.

The plot has some surprising twists, particularly at the end and some good subsidiary characters, but the love interest is pale and the pace at time too frantic.

Review

While the main characters of this funny, thought-provoking book are teenagers, this is a book so well written that it will appeal to anyone who picks it up. It is simply a good story.

While the main theme is destruction of the fragile ecosystem of the Florida Everglades, the eccentric characters, vile baddies and humorous touches mean that it is not at all depressing, and the details of the wildlife, including a panther, give a vivid picture of the environment. Recommended.
