Another great story from Robin Hobb. Thank goodness, for a tale in the same setting as previous series, (Tawny Man, Live Traders, Mad Ships) one doesn't feel as though one has come in on the second act which is unusual and greatly appreciated. The serpents have made it up the river and have hatched into dragons, but these are few and those few are mentally and physically deficient. Nevare Burvelle, a soldiers son born into new nobility knows that he will be a soldier when he is older. With this firmly in his mind he is sent to the military Academy where young nobility both old and new are trained up. But because of an earlier meeting with a Shaman and a mysterious guardian woman, Nevares time at the Acamedy does not end as honourably as his father intended. Once fighting fit and lean, his body swells in size regardless of what he eats, perhaps it is connected to the strange Specks and their plague that is destroying Gernia.
