Dark Origins:Level 26:Book One

Author
Anthony E. Zuiker
Genre
Review

Written by the creator of the TV series CSI:Crime Scene Investigation, this book had a lot to live up to.

It follows a similar theme, with the main character having to track and trace a killer before he harms those closest to him, however it follows police work more than the forensic side of things.

Zuikers' screen writing history is evident throughout, with a very graphic, visually orientated descriptions of characters and places, that change quickly from one'scene' to the next.

The Help

This is an amazing book set in Mississippi in the 1960s where the seeds of the rebellion to follow were taking root.I like the way the author puts herself into the minds of the black maids and the unique way they spoke,
which I found quite a challange to read at first.

Tell Me Something (review 2)

Author
Adele Parks
Genre
Review

I was pleasantly surprised by this book, after not being too impressed with some of Parks' others. I found it easy to read with a good storyline that steadily developed throughout the book. The ending was very predictable, but that did not make the book any less enjoyable to read. The main character, Elizabeth, did get a little annoying at times, with her obsession for having a baby, but the other characters in the story compensated for this quite well.
After reading this i am prepared to give more of Adele Parks' books a go.

Playing Away

Author
Adele Parks
Genre
Review

Unfortunately i did not enjoy this book. I found the storyline repetitive, the characters annoying, and not a lot seemed to happen for the majority of the book. The chapters were also quite long, which I found meant that I could not just sit down to read one chapter here and there, something I tend to enjoy about chick-lit novels. In my opinion, not one of adele parks' best.

What to do when someone dies

Author
Nicci French
Genre
Review

When Ellie's husband is killed in a car crash along with a woman the police assume he was having an affair and that their deaths were an accident. Ellie is not totally convinced and sets out to find out more.

This is a well written easy read, plenty of good dialogue and detail and generally convincing characters although modestly I have to say that I found the person who turns out to be the killer jarred with me from the start ! However I felt that the later slightly unbelievable plot developments and the rushed end detracted from the whole.

A good book with great characters that you can really get involved with. An easy story to follow, which is just what you need from a chick-lit, however the ending is a little weak, leaving you wanting to know what happens next.
Good for reading on holiday by the pool!

The Last Pope

Review

I found this book a bit confusing to start with, as it jumps form past to present and character to character, however about half way through, the story focuses more on the present, and it turns into a thrilling compelling story.

Singing to the Dead

Caro Ramsay

Review

This book is very difficult to get into at the start. The characters are not very well introduced, and since they are all police staff, it becomes very confusing and difficult to tell PC x from DCI y. I found that the story is also very slow to get going. However the book redeems itself in the last two sections as the story picks up and the characters personalities show more. The whole story reveals itself in the final chapter with an interesting ending.

Millroy the Magician

Author
Paul Theroux
Genre
Review

I find Paul Theroux a very interesting and deep read; he's not one to be read over a quick cup of tea, he demands concentration and always rewards it.

Millroy is just such a read and, like the main character, does not give its secrets up easily. By the end of the novel we've no further clues as to who Millroy is except he possess the most amazing powers and has a large pre-occupation with eating habits and "movements", but he is a fascinating character - one of the true originals.
