Low Red Moon

Author
Ivy Devlin
Genre
Review

"I was covered in blood when the police found me", not the traditional opener for a teen novel! but Devlin throws the reader straight into the thick of things in this novel: a fantastically consuming story that's a cross between the Twilight saga and TV show Teen Wolf.

The characters are compelling and instantly relatable and you feel complete empathy with the lead character Avery, a teenage girl whose parents have just been murdered, and life thrown upside-down as she has to leave her home in the woods to live with her grandmother whom she hardly knows.

The Aviary Gate

Author
Katie Hickman
Genre
Review

The Aviary Gate seems like a novel that could be a bit like Marmite! Love it or Hate it! I'm not one for historical novels but went along with this one, with an open mind. I'm glad I did! I felt very Marmite-ish about it, too. As in there were parts I thought brilliant and parts that just... weren't! Hickman has written a book that lusciously describes Constantinople in 1599, with the silks, perfumed gardens, jewels etc... You can almost feel and see the world she was trying to create, it's stunning and utterly involving. ..read more

Genre
Review

Faustin Charles and Michael Terry certainly have a partnership made just for children that is very special. Faustin's writing and Michael's illustrations are perfect for each of these mini books in this box set.

Each book covers a different subject - in this case, Sounds, Food, Animals, Numbers, colours and Words, with the stories being simple and easy to grasp. The format is a simple mini card book - excellent for tiny fingers to hold.

I highly recommend this for the under 3s.

No and Me

Author
Delphine de Vigan
Genre
Review

Although this is a children's book, I enjoyed it. I identified well with the characters, and enjoyed following No's story and learning about her past.

The main character, Lou, made me laugh with her racing mind and over analysis of every situation, which could have been annoying in an adult character, but fitted her teenage personality well.

I think I would enjoy other books by the same author, and think she would do very well writing a children's book series.

The Outlander

Gil Adamson
Genre
Review

This is an exciting story about a girl called Mary Boulton who is running away from her brothers - in - law, who want to bring her to justice becouse she shot her husband!

I could almost feel Mary's fear and desperation - nearly bordering on madness as she kept running for her life.

This is a poignant story in so many ways with wives
in those days having no rights, and in some cases they were treated worse than their animals - so Mary had no
defense.

A well thought out plot with plenty of drama, and beautiful descriptive writing and a little light relief.
