Oink! My Life With Minipigs

Author
Matt Whyman
Genre
Review

Matt Whyman's 'Oink' is warm hearted anecdotal story of life with two minipigs, chickens, cats and a dog, not forgetting the wife and kids!!

Love this book with Roxi and Butch the two minipigs who are quite a couple of characters always on the lookout for mischief and mayhem! But they are intergrated into the family taking up sofa and floor space, not forgetting the garden and the rest of the menagerie.

Matt has lots of laugh out loud moments with these lovable rogues especially when they get roaring drunk on next door fermenting apples!!

The Land of the Painted Caves

Author
Jean M Auel
Genre
Review

The final chapter of Jean Auel's Earth's children saga and what a disappointment ! The author has literally lost the plot.

There is so much repetition, not just in this volume but also from previous books - instance cattails, Mother's song , foreign, exotic. There is no plot as such until the last third of the book until Jondalar, thoroughly out of character, and out of the blue, has sex with a previous lover, and even the consequent reconciliation is unsatisfactory.

The Wish

Author
Angela Donovan
Genre
Review

I love this book and the way it is written, in easy short chapters, with the ultimate goal of making your wish/dream come true. But there is work to do first and that is change yourself, change the world. It is a profound book and I found that by reading each chapter slowly and doing the meditations the changes will come so that you are well and truly prepared for that wish/dream to come true.

I highly recommend this book for all who want to make their dreams and wishes a happening.

Self Compassion

Author
Kristin Neff
Genre
Review

There are many books out there on Self Compassion, but none I truly as indepth as Dr Kristin Neff's is. I wondered how hard could it be, to be compassionate to ourselves - it actually turns out to be quite hard indeed. We actually love to beat ourselves up at the first available opportunity, and that's because we are so competitive in this day and age, and with the extra adage of trying to be over and above perfect, no wonder we have difficulty here!

What Good is God

Author
Philip Yancey
Genre
Review

'What Good is God' is an extraordinary journey that author Philip Yancey has taken us on, in travelling to six different countries that have suffered severe trauma. But this isn't just about other people and how they cope in in such severe circumstances, but about Philip's own journey and how he feels about the situation. It is about how following the Word of Jesus Christ and how is changes us personally to do better in life, and how we see how other people have changed and then they become an example to us - it is also about Grace. But the biggest surprise to me was how much C.S. ..read more

Second Chance

Genre
Review

Wow - what can I say! RT Kendall is not one to mince his words, and comes straight to the point very quickly. If you are willing to humble yourself, admit your failure and work in Faith to get that second chance, then RT Kendall will guide you all the way with this book.

As always he is excellent and points out that God never stops Loving you in any way - that's where the Faith bit comes in because you really do need to accept this!

A wonderfully Pink bible - that's small and zipped - so easy to carry without damaging those very thin pages. I like the NIV version of which this is - but the writing is small! Great for young eyes but those of an older dispostion will need those magnifying glasses!

Cycling Home from Siberia

Author
Rob Liwall
Genre
Review

An enjoyable account of a young man's need to prove and find himself although not many would take such an extreme way to do it. Read it this way, not as a travel book, nor as an in-depth psychological insight.

It is a well written, modern, very personal blog style report on his travels, sometimes preoccupied with his feelings, at other times with the terrain he is passing through, or the political and cultural differences, but always with the people he meets and at the core his growing religious commitment.

It will be interesting to see if and what he produces next.

This Body of Death

Author
Elizabeth George
Genre
Review

I always look out for a new Elizabeth George novel and this Inspector Lynley didn't disappoint. As usual, the book was very well researched - so much so, that it was very disturbing in places. The references to a child abduction and murder by children is very upsetting. As the mother of young children when Jamie Bulger was killed many years ago, I was reading these chapters through my fingers and the story flashes back without the reader knowing who's past we are looking into.
