The Summer of the Bear

Author
Bella Pollen
Genre
Review

Loch Eynort 1968I have always loved wild and deserted places, especially if they are islands. They are exciting. There is nothing more therapeutic for the soul, than being close to nature in a wild place. So it is not surprising that I could empathise with Letty (Leticia) in Bella Pollen's ‘The Summer of the Bear'.

The Herring in the Library

Author
L.C. Tyler
Genre
Review

Another gem of a book about two unlikly sleuths Elsie and Ethelred. I love the character of Elsie becouse she is so over the top in everthing that she does, very direct and quite tactless at times which leaves poor Ethelred squirming in his shoes, but he is the perfect foil for Elsie.

For the first time the reader is given an insight into L.C. Tyler's latest historical crime novel and I can understand why he is only published barely once a year.

Ten Little Herrings

Review

This book is one of the most amusing that I have read for a very long time,it is a send up of the country house
murders where all suspects are rounded up in the Drawing Room and the guilty party is revealed.

The main characters are Ethelred who is a crime writer and Elsie who is his agent, who seems to spend most of her time keeping Ethelred on the straight and narrow, while feeding her addiction to chocolate.

The dialogue between them is so sharp and witty it is almost like a comedy act. A very funny book with a clever plot and an absolute joy to read.

The Perfect Murder review 2

Review

Perfect Murder - a quick read, it most certainly was! I thoroughly enjoyed this well crafted stand alone, very short crime novel by Peter James. It has a wonderful twist at the end - but read it carefully because you may miss it - the beginning is the important bit!

Highly recommend - it only takes an hour to read!

Review

This is a clever and very funny book - I love the main character Christian Sorenson Birtwhite, a middle aged trendy who takes notheing or anybody seriously.

Beautifully observed characters with a well thought out stroy line and surprise ending. Nothing is quite what it seems, but I thoroughly enjoyed the authors forays into philosophy. Well worth reading and highly recommended.

The Incendiary TRail

Author
James McCreet
Genre
Review

This is the first book by James McCreet about a murderer on the loose in Victorian London, who loves burning down buildings, and is creating havoc among the inhabitants. His vivid descriptions of the low life of London, and the public hanging of a murderer are quite harrowing. The relationship between the top brass of the police and the new detective force is very interesting. The only thing that really irritated me was that the author seemed to be leading the reader by the hand. I quote: "We will step momentarily away from the case" etc etc

The Perfect Murder - Quick Reads

Author
Peter James
Genre
Review

The Perfect Murder? Not quite, but a perfect read nonetheless - a really nice way to while away half-an-hour. This is a light-hearted, almost Ealing-esque murder mystery which combines the supernatural elements that infused Peters early novels.

Both Victor and Kamila are well rounded and realised with their quirks and idiosyncrasies, and the break up of their marriage is nicely handled highlighting the way they both fall in and out of love. In the beginning their mutual attraction is quite touching before the irony seeps in and those idiosyncrasies end up damning them both.

Crescent Moon

Author
Lori Handeland
Genre
Review

A cleverly written book that combines a sensible start with fantasy fiction of warewolves and voodoo spirits - not something that is expected but Handeland has really taken into consideration old myths and legends and their origins when writing the book, and blended them with the modern day so well that it makes the reader feel that running around chasing warewolves could infact be a perfectly normal activity!

A book that will no doubt be popular given the recent Twilight mania, however not one for younger readers as there are some fairly graphic love scenes involved.

The Heart of Horses

Author
Molly Gloss
Genre
Review

An easy read and quite touching book about 1900's West America and the farming communities that inhabited it.
The author gives you a clear insight into the lifestyle of the times, and it is surprising how accepting people were despite the hardships they were facing themselves. As the story develops you grow to like the main character Martha who just wants to live a simple life with the horses but becomes part of the community as time goes on.
