The Blade Itself

Author
Genre
Review

The setting and the most of the main characters seem familiar fantasy territory: Logen the craggy seasoned warrior, Jezal the dilettante nobleman and Bayaz the world-weary aged magician; in a medieval-ish Europe. Glokta, the bitter and conflicted victim-turned-torturer was a more unusual and refreshing point of view. Joe sets aside enough time for the reader to get know each of the main charaters in turn.

Swiftly

Author
Genre
Review

Adam Roberts is described on the back cover of his latest book as ‘one of the UK's most critically acclaimed SF writers', and Swiftly is a hugely ambitious work in both scope and length (406 pages).

Although the author's record suggests that it should be classified as SF, it ranges beyond the UFO/Galactic Beings scenario which I personally found one of the less satisfying, if logically necessary, elements of the novel, to intense literary allusions and some intriguing historical counter-factuals.

This is set in the present day southern states of America, but not as we know it. Vampires have emerged into the dark, and been granted legal citizenship, and the werewolves are seriously considering coming out of the closet too. Sookie Stackhouse is, possibly thanks to a faerie ancestor, a human telepath, working for the vampire Queen of Louisiana. A power struggle is going on between the vampire Kings and Queens, following the devastation of hurricane Katrina and Sookie's powers are required.

Having been struck by lightning at 15, Harper Connelly can sense the dead, even those long buried.

Obviously this aptitude has its uses, and, now in her early twenties and in need of earning a living, she and her elder brother Tolliver hire themselves out to those who would use it.

The Name of the Wind

Most of the book follows the early life of Kvothe, bracketed by some ‘present-day' chapters where we meet him as ‘just' an innkeeper. The medieaval-style setting feels similar to other fantasy worlds that I've read with the detailed vocabulary, religion and magical elements building up a distinct setting. We find out how ‘sympathy' (magic) works as young Kvothe learns it before and at University.

Hogfather - The Illustrated Screenplay

Author

Review

I really don't like reading scripts but this one is totally different. I was utterly enthralled by the pictures, sketchings, and sidebits - it was all very lively and most important very very easy to read making the script easy to understand.

The pictures and illustrations helped me to understand how you can go from a sketch and then see the actor in the clothes, or the stage set go from a drawing to reality.

I have to say I loved it all and if you never read another script again, just read this one - you wont regret it.

Review

I read this book with a little bit of trepidation as I just don't like Science Fiction, but it made me think very deeply about the way our earth is changing because of Global warming.

The story as you can see from the synopsis shows how the water surface of the world rises by a tremendous height over the years between 2016 and 2050. Many of us will not be around by the later date, unless the elder generation go on living till they're well into they're 100+ years.
