6,000 years ago, the land is one dark forest. Its people are hunters and gatherers. They know every tree and herb and they know how to survive in a world steeped in enchantment, menace and powerful magic. Until an ambitious and malignant force conjures up a demon; a demon so evil that it can be contained only in the body of a ferocious bear; a demon so hungry for death that it slays everything it sees; a demon with the potential to destroy the world. Only Torak and his wolf companion can save the world.
The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness is a 6 book arc with the first three plublished so far being
WOLF BROTHER, SPIRIT WALKER & SOUL EATER
Review
If Michelle Paver had been born in the ancient times that here stories are set she would have been the tribe storyteller/crone without a doubt. Her use of language is wonderful and inventive e.g Sky is Up, River is Wide Water, Humans are Tailless, or Snow is Bright Soft Cold - this kind of creativity runs throughout the three books and audio cds.
Michelle sets her young adventurers Torak, Renn and Wolf back several thousand years when Myths and legends abounded where there is nothing but your wits to carry you through life and off course your tribe which is everything.
In the first book WOLF BROTHER we meet Torak just after his father has been murdered by the bear with the evil spirit and his father's dying words are that he is to go to the mountains. Torak has no idea why, and here begins his journey.
Both the book and audio cds are interchangable as I discovered and Sir Ian McKellen brilliant rendition only serves to enhance Michelle Paver's words.
