Synopsis

In rural Devon, six-year-old Joanna Mason witnesses an appalling crime. Thirty years later the man convicted of the crime is released from prison. In Edinburgh, sixteen-year-old Reggie works as a nanny for a G.P. But Dr Hunter has gone missing and Reggie seems to be the only person who is worried. Across town, Detective Chief Inspector Louise Monroe is also looking for a missing person, unaware that hurtling towards her is an old friend - Jackson Brodie - himself on a journey that becomes fatally interrupted.

Review

This is the third book by Kate Atkinson featuring Jackson Brodie. Although I hadn't read the previous two, this one can be read as a ‘stand alone' book.

I found it a little confusing at the start as in the first three chapters you meet three different characters in three different storylines, and I wasn't sure whether I had missed the connection somewhere, but if you persevere, the connections come together later in the book. In fact you discover a lot of connections the further you read and there are quite a few coincidences, which do seem a little far fetched, but didn't stop my enjoyment of the book.

It was definitely an apt title for the book as the characters have had or are having to cope with quite hard and sometimes tragic events. There is certainly a lot of suffering in the book, but you still want to keep reading to see how it all turns out. There is also a ‘detective' element with a mystery disappearance to get you thinking.

It was a good read and I didn't want to put the book down. I would definitely look out for other books written by the same author.
