Review
Victor Pemberton is a genius at writing stories in and around the war years. Every one that comes out is based in and around London and you can smell the atmosphere because he can put the sights and the sounds of Old London Town down so well on paper.
I can still remember the Blue Buses that used to travel on those routes down to the west country; Which today we all know as the National Express Coaches. From little dreams a great and thriving industry. I can feel the excitement of Mary as she and her family have the chance to enjoy as proper holiday and not the traditional trip to Southend.
This story warms the cockles of your heart, the loss of family, the making of new friends and new jobs. As in today, it is the case of being in the right spot at the right time, as Mary was to get the job at the picture house. So the story twists and turns till its conclusion.
Victor Pemberton is a brilliant author and what he does not know about London, I would think is not worth knowing. How he has managed to find the time to write all these books and be involved in television and radio amazes me. But I still say give us more, because back in those years people did really know their neighbours and cared what happened to them.
