When Clara O'Toole and her grandmother, Bernie, attend a meeting held by a medium, they hope to be able to get in touch with Clara's father, who was killed at the Front. Whilst they remain doubtful about the existence of a spirit world, the experience does inspire Bernie to trace her one surviving child - Gertie. Clara's search for her missing aunt brings her into contact with a whole new extended family. She is over the moon to find she has a cousin, but is she ready to be drawn into the tragedies and secrets of family's past?
Review
I love stories that are about families, especially those that have a secret in their past and skeletons in the cupboard. This is a great book for just that. As the end of the war rolls on we meet three families, the Bennetts whose dad was found to be injured and also Clara O'Toole who has lost her dad, the third family will come in at a later point, that of the Bennett's inlaws.
There is lots of mystery and mind games that go on within this families. The Bennetts have a secret to hide and Clara discovers she has cousins, nephews and nieces that she did not know existed!
It all is very intriguiging and as the story unfolds we find members who don't want to admit they exist, and others who want to meet their cousin. Where will it all lead who knows?
But what I know is that it is brilliantly written and is a book that keeps you guessing till the very end about who belongs to who!! June Francis has managed to do a story that shows how families end up divided but return together when trouble and strife come there way.
I loved the book and the mysteries it contains.
