Synopsis

Speaker, journalist and bestselling author, Philip Yancey has travelled the world tackling the most challenging questions:

Can God truly bring solace to the terrorised people of Mumbai, or the students who witnessed the murder of their classmates?

Will the deep scars of racism ever heal in post-apartheid South Africa, or the American South?

Can a persecuted Christian minority have any impact in places as hostile as China or the Middle East?

For each of his ten destinations, WHAT GOOD IS GOD? shares Philip's inspiring words of encouragement and reveals the compelling story behind the speaking engagement.

Whether he's addressing alcoholics or Bible college students, sex workers or C. S. Lewis enthusiasts, Yancey's experiences of redemption, hope and grace provide evidence that when we are severely tested, faith really does matter.

Review

'What Good is God' is an extraordinary journey that author Philip Yancey has taken us on, in travelling to six different countries that have suffered severe trauma. But this isn't just about other people and how they cope in in such severe circumstances, but about Philip's own journey and how he feels about the situation. It is about how following the Word of Jesus Christ and how is changes us personally to do better in life, and how we see how other people have changed and then they become an example to us - it is also about Grace. But the biggest surprise to me was how much C.S. Lewis had effected the author - he devotes two full chapters to him!

I very much enjoyed this book and all that it taught me with Philip Yancey's style of writing being very anecdotal and easy to read. He is never in your face in what you should believe, but very gentle and encouraging as he explores his chosen subject.

A book to highly recommend for all people who are trying to make sense of what is happening in this world of ours and asking the question - 'What Good is God' in this situation?
