Review

This book is amazing, it tells of what happened when the Berlin Wall went up in Germany.  I only remember vaguley what happened, and yet the tearing down of the wall I can remember vividley.

This story is very emotive and shows the state of peoples minds and what they had to go through especially if one of their family was on the otherside of the wall and was deemed to have escaped.  What would you or I do as a mother presented with the circumstances the Trudy Hulst has to face, knowing her husband has defected and that she could face prison for life and her son being taken from her.

I can say the writing and the stoy are beautifully written, the detail is second to none and as a westerner I can just imagine what it was like for her to see her child through the barbed wire and not be able to get him over on to the west bank to join her there.  It must have been heartbreaking.

I have really enjoyed the way this book is written with long and short conversations between characters. How the other other embassies, especially the Americans were to support those that ended on the wrong side of the wall.

As we reach the end of the story the news is breaking of the assination of President John F. Kennedy is shot and killed. That is when we get to the point in history, that many of us remember the opening of the checkpoints on the wall so that people could pass freely from one side to the other.

Fantastic story even though it is on such an emotive subject of the clashes between East and West Germany.
