Mesopotamian Blue cat Varjak Paw has never been outside before, but Varjak is forced out into the city when the sinister gentleman and his two menacing cats take over his home. With help from a mystical ancestor, he manages to overcome the challenges of survival, but can he save his family?
Review
I absolutely loved Varjak Paw with it's mix of martial arts and spiritual philosophies. His adventures once he gains courage to leave the home where his family live are wonderful. Writer SF Said has not only taken his hero on a journey of intense learning about the world outside, but also the internal one where he takes lessons from Jalal and ancient ancestor in his dreams and uses this knowledge to save his family from a certain death.
The stylised illustrations by Dave McKean are perfect for story and show quite graphically the drama at hand.
I highly recommend this book for both children and adults and the follow up book The Outlaw Varjak Paw is equally as good. I hope SF Said writes some more Varjak Paw stories. You can hear SF talk now about his experiences.
