Synopsis

The second book in this edgy urban fantasy trilogy.

Chess is a fiercely independent witch and talented Debunker - working for the Church of Real Truth to exorcise ghosts and expose human liars. But she has a dark little secret that is causing her a lot of problems... a drug addiction.

Trying to catch a spectral serial killer with a fondness for his victims' eyes is distracting Chess from her day job, and her growing attraction to Terrible is making things worse.

Life is getting too complicated and Chess must break the rules to keep her head above water.

Review

Again we follow Chess Putnam as she tries to banish ghosts and uncover false hauntings, whist keeping her personal life out of work.

As her cases become more complex, it becomes increasingly difficult for her to keep on top of her Church work whilst acting as go between for drug dealers Bump and Slobag, without either of them finding out she's working for the other, and without the Church finding out about her drug habit.

In this second book you get to know the characters more deeply as their lives become more complicated, and Kane has even managed to fit in a bit of romance among all the magic, sex, drugs and gore.

Kane writes well, and despite the books being a work of fiction, they are not terribly fantastical - the characters could believably be from a run-down downtown area. She does very well in developing Chess' story, and as you get to know her more deeply, you do end up feeling sorry for her and all she has been through.

I really enjoyed the second Downside Ghosts instalment and look forward to reading the third.
