Synopsis

1854. As the Cardiff-bound train puffs out of Paddington Station, young Hugh Kellow wraps a protective arm around his large valise. He has been entrusted with a priceless silver coffee pot, designed in the shape of a locomotive, by his elderly silversmith employer. But two of Hugh's fellow passengers are taking an enormous interest in the young man and his priceless cargo. When a dead body is discovered in a room at the Cardiff Railway Hotel, beside an empty valise, the great Railway Detective Robert Colbeck and his trusty sergeant Victor Leeming are called in to investigate; and face a whole host of unexpected problems.

Review

Another book in the Victorian Railway Series with Inspector Colbeck and Sargeant Leeming. This is the best book that I have read by Edward Marston so far. A very clever plot involving the theft of a Silver Locomotive Coffee Pot and the murder of a young man.

The author puts out so many Red Herringst that all the reader can do is to keep reading - I read this book within two days! The part I really enjoyed was about the Buckmasters Players, which is a travelling Theatre Company who are on the way to Cardiff. Nigel Buckmasters is a larger than life character who has an eye for the ladies, but he always seems to be in Actor mode. This gave me an insight into how the Railways changed peoples lifes,it was much quicker and distance was no problem. When I consider that these travelling Theatre Companies took everything with them including the Scenery I wonder how they managed before.

A pacey novel with an exciting finish,Ienjoyed it very much.Highly Recommended
