Synopsis

1851 and the city of London anticipates the grand opening of the Great Expedition. The London to Birmingham mail train is looted and derailed and Detective Colbeck fights to untangle a web of murder, blackmail and destruction.

Review

The first book in the Victorian Railway Series, with Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck and Sargeant Victor Leeming, who are investigating the derailing of a train and a badly beaten up Driver and Fireman.

This story races along like a runaway train with the gang outwitting the Inspector at every turn. There are so many different characters, which I found very amusing especially the interplay between Inspector Colbeck and his superior
officer Superdintant Tally, because the Inspector is light years ahead of his Superior in intelligence and knowledge of the criminal mind; but petty regulations must be observed!

A very good story with an exciting plot, but what I really enjoyed was the author's detailed descriptions of the different Steam Locomotives and his knowledge of the Victorian Railways.I feel that the author was on much surer ground writing about the Railways than about the Restoration period,I enjoyed this book much more.
