Synopsis

Sally is watching the news with her husband when she hears a name she ought not to recognise: Mark Bretherick. Last year, a work trip Sally had planned was cancelled at the last minute. Desperate for a break from her busy life juggling work and a young family, Sally didn't tell her husband that the trip had fallen through. Instead, she booked a week off work and treated herself to a secret holiday. All she wanted was a bit of peace -- some time to herself -- but it didn't work out that way. Because Sally met a man -- Mark Bretherick. All the details are the same: where he lives, his job, his wife Geraldine and daughter Lucy. Except that the man on the news is a man Sally has never seen before. And Geraldine and Lucy Bretherick are both dead ...

Review

This is a real chiller of a thriller about the after effect of rape. Sophie Hannah has a wonderful way of telling a story which is so well written; and the way the chapters are headed from police records and other information either by date or from statements, it is astoundingly realistic, and if I had been just told the story I would have said no it could never happen.

But this is the story that Sophie sets out to tell us of a man whose wife and child have died; yet the person they are talking about and the person Sally had met with the same name, is not the person she is seeing on the television, and so the twists and turns of this epic chiller thriller unravel and suprise us with the similarities and the differences on every page.

What should Sally the main charactor do? Should she tell the police of her suspicions or just keep this to herself that she has met a man like this in her past.

This third novel is yet another psychological suspence and combines much page turning narative and as well as the deperate lives of families torn apart within this amazing book.
