A murder has been committed - but as the victim was a rapist, recently released from prison, no one is too concerned about the crime. That is, until Detective Inspector John Rebus and DS Siobhan Clarke uncover evidence that a serial killer is on the loose ...When Rebus also starts looking into the apparent suicide of an MP, he is abruptly warned off the case, not least because the G8 leaders have gathered in Scotland, and Rebus's bosses want him well out of the way. But Rebus has never been one to stick to the rules, and when Siobhan has a very personal reason for hunting down a riot cop, it looks as though both Rebus and Clarke may be up against their own side ...
Review
This story is set in and around the tight time frame of the G8 summit in Edinburgh which works very well.
DI John Rebus has been pushed to the sidelines because his bosses do not want him to be an embarressment to them when the eyes of the world are on Edinburgh because of the summit. Things change though when during the night a young politician falls to his death from the walls of Edinburgh Castle which automatically drags Rhebus back into the limelight.
I found this story particularly stood up well in it's own right if you have not met Rebus before. He is still there as cranky and as obnoxious as ever, but stepping back slightly. We see the introduction of Siobhan Clarke with her character taking a bigger role, which develops quite nicely and leaves you wanting even more from her in the next episode. This makes you wonder if Ian is building Siobhan up to take over Rebus's reign in the Edinburgh Police Force.
DI John Rebus has been a wonderful character and I really do not know what we will do when the last Rebus novel comes out in 12- 18 months time. Rebus will be sadly missed and Ian will need to think up a new charactor to take his place. I listened to this on CD and loved the voice of James Macpherson who read this and other books written by Ian.
