While he was still alive, he healed the sick, hung with the low-lifes and offended the authorities at every turn...But it was only after they'd killed him that the world really got turned upside down. This is the death -- and resurrection -- story of the most extraordinary man who ever lived. A man who lived two thousand years ago, but shaped the world as we know it. A man who changes lives, even today. This is the last of an epic three volume series which tells the powerful story of Jesus in greater depth.
Review
I suppose these are the modern day equivalent to the old Cecil B De Mill Epic's. The artwork is very dynamic and the action flows, even though the dialogue is sometimes sporadic and at odds with itself (see previous reviews for more). This last volume speaks of the Crucifixion and subsequent resurrection and manages to give a lot of socio-political context to it. We understand a little more of just who Pontius Pilot was and why he was so reticent to pass judgement on Jesus.
Again, very little is made of Mary Magdalene - she has only been mentioned briefly in these books and of all the characters in Jesus's life I'd have thought her role would have been expanded.
I'm still not sure what I feel about these books - I think that Siku is to be commended for trying to bridge the gap between the Bible and the present generation, but for me I'm not sure he succeeds. I'm not entirely sure whether Manga was the best format for them - the action packed format of Manga seems at complete odds with the Bible (although the excellent series "With The Light" shows just how poignant and subtle Manga can really be).
