On a remote Greek Island, Nicholas Urfe finds himself embroiled in the deceptions of a master trickster. As reality and illusion intertwine, Urfe is caught up in the darkest of psychological games. John Fowles expertly unfolds a tale that is lush with over-powering imagery in a spellbinding exploration of human complexities. By turns disturbing, thrilling and seductive, "The Magus" is a feast for the mind and the senses.
Review
I read this on holiday on the Isle of Wight a few years ago, and I found it to be the most enigmatic and enthralling book I've ever read. It doesn't give its answers easily - that's if there are any answers to be had at all- and it has a labyrinthine plot full of subtle mind-games
Despite having a protagonist who is hard to empathise with it's easy to lose yourself in this story. I spent the entire holiday on the beach not wanting to put this mammoth book down. (This is from the guy who wouldn't read the "Lord Of The Rings" because it was too long!) I didn't notice that The Magus was 656 pages long until the end of the book, and I could easily have read another 700 pages: I didn't want it to end.
This is a mysterious and seductive book guaranteed to throw the doors of perception wide open. If you like your books to be deep and meaningful, then this does not disappoint.
