Every day we use our mobiles and computers to communicate, but ironically we are losing touch with face-to-face talk. Catherine Blyth reveals the endless possibilities of conversation and shows that when it works it can come close to heaven. With examples from Elizabeth I to Tommy Cooper, courtesans to nomads, The Art of Conversation is full of tips on listening, the perfect handshake, talking shop and surviving conversational bores. Be it sharing a joke with a stranger, sparking a new idea or just letting off steam with a friend, there are infinite adventures to be had if you break the ice and say hello
Review
Hello! In such an age of digital technology and conversing in "real time" have we really lost the art of conversation? Catherine Blyth certainly seems to think so, and I am inclined to agree with her. Conversation has been reduced to inane texts and "banter" on facebook, limited to witty reposts and one line statements that can only be answered in text speak - lol indeed.
In the "Art of Conversation" Catherine takes our hands through the mindfield of *aghast and agog* talking to each other; offering interesting insights and step by step guidelines about the do's and don't's when entering into conversations.
Rather than being preachy, or taking the kindergarten approach to teaching, this book offers some witty examples of real life conversations, and suggests several scenario's where conversations flutter and fluster before going belly-up, and -more importantly- how to avoid such situations.
I found this book to be very informative and think it's a must read, and can't wait to put some of the lessons into practice! Anyone interested in holding a conversation with me?
