Synopsis

When Samuel Godwin, a young and naive art tutor, accepts a job with the Farrow family at their majestic home, little does he expect to come across such a web of secrets and lies. His two tutees are as different as chalk and cheese - the beautiful younger sister Marianne, full of flightiness and nervous imagination, and Juliana, oddly sensible and controlled. Assisted by their elusive governess, Charlotte Agnew, Samuel begins to uncover slowly why Marianne is so emotionally fragile. But his discoveries lead to revenge and betrayal - and lives all around are turned upside down as life and death combat each other for supremacy. Linda Newbery has written a novel in diary style, combining different voices and a different century with her usual brilliance and ease. These are characters full of the same passions as our own today, while living in a less familiar and fascinating time.

Review

This book by Linda Newbury is beautifully written with fabulous description and expressive dialogue.

Set in Stone, is a very deceptive book and is not what one would believe it to be about if you were to just look at the dust cover. It depicts a rambling old building set behind big gates - yes the gates are in the story and so is the house but the descriptions of the house in the story are wonderful. The house has been built especially for the owner, who commisioned it and has designed or been involved in every aspect of its build and the sculptures around the walls.

There are many twists and turns to the story and the main characters have many hidden aspects to their lives. The daughters are seen to be disturbed, but wait and see the reasons and the hidden story behind this fantastic book by Linda Newbery.

I loved it and will look out for more books by this author because she has a wonderful gift of story telling, but with the insight into subjects that were taboo but, often, for me out in todays world. This is good to see that such a subject can be tackled in such a quite sensible and efficient way.  Well done.
