Review

Right to the Edge:Sydney to Tokyo By Any Means is Charley Boorman's third solo book and a good one it is too. We see Charley travel from Sydney in Australia and go by any means of transport around the Pacific Rim visitng most of the major islands and countries until he arrives in Tokyo, Japan.

Jeff Gulvin who is the writer who conveys Charleys adventures, fears, hopes and fun and most of all his spirit of generosity - has done a fantastic job.

Charley has had an amazing time travelling and meeting people and we who have read his books and seen the DVDs are struck by the warmth that he seems to exude; but he is not shy in talking about how he feels in missing his family or the frustrations he feels when things don't go quite to plan. We are with him at every step of his adventure, utterly enthralled at each different type of transport he uses and the fun he has with it. Whilst motorbikes are his favourite - I think the shark painted kit Spitfire must come a very close second!

As ever on these journeys Charley always makes time for a UNICEF project - and this one was no differentwith the village of Cendana Putih the focal point. Here a simple water filtration unit is made of shelves, sand, stones and very large jars or barrels. The water goes in raw and muddy full of bugs and bacteria and comes out the other end clear and clean! Brilliant.

With Charley there are so many action packed vignettes to enjoy that I heartily recommend this book without hesitation.
