"Red Spikes" - ten steps to the heart. This work contains ten tales to jab and poke - at your darkest fears, your secret desires. Margo Lanagan's short stories take place in worlds not quite our own, and yet each one illuminates what it is to be human. They are stories of yearning for more, and learning to live with what you have. Stories that show the imprint love leaves on us all. For anyone who likes to be surprised, touched, unsettled, intrigued, or scared, prepare to be dazzled by what a master storyteller can do in a few short pages.
Review
This is a small book with ten short stories, some are very strange but they do as the back cover states "Ten stabs at the Heart - Ten tales that poke and jab at your darkest fears and your secret desires."
All of the stories are well written but some are mighty weirdly off world, but even though they are weird they really do get your mind working.
Margo Lanagan is a very good writer, with her writing being for the teenagers for which she won the 2007 Australian Book Council Award for Older Children. Margo can do short stories with a great twist very well, but I think teenagers would love more, perhaps a full length novel with lots more meat in it.
