Synopsis

Multi-award winning spirituality writer Philip Yancey is loved throughout the world for his honest, insightful and inspirational writing. PRAYER: DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE? carries all the hallmarks of classic Yancey, a journalist by training. His quest to unravel the mysteries of prayer reads as the journal of a fellow traveller: questioning, challenging, lamenting the unexplainable and rejoicing in the discovery of awesome insights. His journey is beautifully illustrated with moving true stories drawn from around the world.PRAYER: DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE? tackles the following questions: What is prayer? What difference does it make? Why and how should we pray? What about unanswered prayer? How should we understand prayer for physical healing?Focusing on such a universal theme, this is potentially Yancey's biggest book yet. To date, his books have sold over 14 million copies, and have been translated into 25 languages. His first book with Hodder, SOUL SURVIVOR, sold over 90,000 copies in just five years.

Review

I first came across Philip Yancey way back in in 2001 when Archie Coates the curate at my local church gave me a copy of What's So Amazing about Grace - I'd decided at the time to give Christianity another go. I wish I'd had a book like Prayer to read - in this version Philip Yancey talks in the foreword about the effect prayer had on his recovery from serious brain and neck injuries he got from a car crash in 2006.

All his books have anecdotal stories either from personal experiences of his own and those of other people which are very useful. He takes you on a journey into prayer - for instance - Unravelling the Mysteries or The Language of Prayer or Prayer Dilemmas - all relevant if you're trying to get your prayer act together.

How many of you have tried to pray and ended up with a very blank brain - raise your hand now - me included, or you're too numb from coping with life?

This book is one to be read slowly, to be taken in and to be nurtured by it and eventually to rest in prayer and the power of prayer.

This is a book for everyone who would like to get their communication with God back on track and I recommend it highly.
