Synopsis
Alexandra Bergson is the eldest child of a Swedish immigrant family newly arrived in the harsh untamed landscape of the American West. An original, determined child, she is driven by two forces: her fierce protective love for her younger brother, and a deep love of the beautiful country she has come to regard as her own. When her father dies, it is she who becomes the head of the family and struggles to soften the wild overgrown soil that surrounds her, nurturing it until, finally, it rewards her with a richness beyond measure..
Review
This is the First of the novels by Willa Cather but i read them the wrong way round. This is how the story first starts of a Swedish immigrant family who are newly arrived to the American West. Home for them is the stretch of plains known as the Divide. When the father of the family group dies the daughter becomes the Head of the Family who struggles to soften the wild, overgrown soil to make it a prosperous farm.
But this success is darkened by loss, and for her devotion to the land may come at the cost of love itself.......I say no more except now I understand My Antonia even better now!!!
Fabulously written book and Cather has an astonishing power to touch an imotive note of the stuggles and strong nerve without a lot of sentimentality. Cather also manages to set down on the page the love for the people that she writes about.
I loved this book it is an amazing and such a wonderful way to understand the life in the old American west.
