Sephy is a Cross - a member of the dark-skinned ruling class. Callum is a nought - a 'colourless' member of the underclass who were once slaves to the Crosses. The two have been friends since early childhood. But that's as far as it can go. Until the first steps are taken towards more social equality and a limited number of Noughts are allowed into Cross schools...Against a background of prejudice and distrust, intensely highlighted by violent terrorist activity by Noughts, a romance builds between Sephy and Callum - a romance that is to lead both of them into terrible danger...
Review
Although this is the first part of a trilogy, this book also reads as a stand alone story.
If you are looking for a really good read that is thought provoking, well paced and well written then read this book. Although written for teenagers it brings up lots of issues that affect people on a daily basis and makes one evaluate ones own attitudes to race.
It is set in a world of apartheid where Noughts and Crosses do not mix except as master and servant.
Sephy is a Cross, and daughter of one of the most powerful people in the country.Callum is a nought, a second class citizen in a world ruled by Crosses. Callum and Sephy had virtually been brought up together in their early years had been the best of friends. But can they maintain their friendship and growing love for each other in a world of change and separation?
But things are changing but far too slowly. The white noughts are no longer prepared to put up with second class status and lack of rights and increasingly turn to violence. The black Crosses are equally determined not to give the Noughts the basic rights they demand. Be prepared to get angry at the injustices dealt to the Noughts, feel involved with the ‘freedom fighters' and yet........
This is a love story with a difference. You will think about the story long after you have read the last page.
