Completing her apprenticeship could prove deadly...With an execution order on her head, Yelena has no choice but to escape to Sitia, the land of her birth. With only a year to master her magic - or face death - Yelena must begin her apprenticeship and travels to the Four Towers of the Magician's Keep. But nothing in Sitia is familiar. Not the family to whom she is a stranger. Not the unsettling new facets of her magic. Nor the brother who resents her return. As she struggles to understand where she belongs and how to control her rare powers, a rogue magician emerges - and Yelena catches his eye.Suddenly she is embroiled in battle of good against evil. And once again it will be her magical abilities that will either save her life...or be her downfall.
Review
And so, Yelena's story continues. More action, more adventure and more bull headedness!
The second offering in this trilogy is slightly frustrating and yet totally engrossing. It's frustrating in the sense that all "good" books are written on the idea that miscommunication or the inability to communicate will advance your plot/character/story etc, making it more angsty, comical, gritty, tense......You get my point! Maria V Snyder has chosen to follow this with great enthusiasm. Her character Yelena, although strong and compassionate, is thoughtless and rash, which means she never gets to learn the lessons being taught, and so circles around the same simple premis; help people, don't tell anyone, or think it through, get into trouble and Valek will save her!
This frustrates me hugely!
But on the other side of the coin, Maria V Snyder has written some beautiful little characters that you just fall in love with! They are quirky and artistic, goofy and powerful, sunny and hard working. These gems really do make the book very good, despite my frustrations. You want to find out what happens next and you want Yelena to actually LEARN something! Or at least I do!!!
