Synopsis

On an Italian hillside, Paulo the shepherd boy plays his wooden flute badly, but thinks he is a match for King Ocean himself. Before he knows it he's swept beneath the waves to an underwater world of dolphins and merfolk. Here King Ocean challenges him to play not only all the songs of the earth, but the songs of the sea, or else stay captive and polish mermaid's scales and scrub salt off the seabed for seven long years. A lyrical story complemented by Peter Malone's stunning fine art illustrations.

Review

This is a fabulous book by Lucy Coats and illustrated by Peter Malone. The cover has a quote on the back which states 'Paulo meets King Ocean in a magical, musical adventure beneath the sea.

Paulo is a little boy who lives in Italy, and you see the village that he lives in. The pictures really depict the area in the village by the sea and the market square. Paulo drives his family mad by humming the sounds of all the animals he hears around him - from the rain on the tin roof of his home, the mice squeaking in the fields, and so his grandfather buys him a tin flute, and thats where this wonderful story takes on the magical twists and turns and leads him under the sea.

I think 8 - 10 year olds will love this book as this is really well presented and they will want to be able to read it for themselves and also to younger brothers and sisters.
