Joe Canelli is a crooked cop working in a corrupt police force. Joe is haunted by nightmares of powerlessness. When his partner is brutally murdered and he's betrayed by his colleagues, it appears that Joe's nightmares are coming true. With his back against the wall, there's only one thing he can do - turn against the criminal network that he once embraced.
Review
David Lloyd is one of the best comic artists full stop. To me, he belongs in the same category as Dave Gibbons and David Mazzucchelli as content over style. Every panel, every pose and mannerism moves the story along. Nothing is erroneous; everything is fluid and plausible - You can not help but believe in the worlds that these guys create.
And such is the case for Kickback. For someone who has illustrated V For Vendetta and 2000AD, this is an artist who can make anything real and the world of corrupt cops and underworld nightmares is almost coming off out from the page.
The artwork is understated and allows the story to shine through, and David Lloyd is a master storyteller. The story is a complex look at the dark underside of police work where lines between crooks and cops are so blurred they're unrecognisable.
I can not recommend this book enough - it's proof that David Lloyd deserves to be up there with the great comic artists of all time.
