If you lived in a house in the woods and all your friends were hibernating you'd probably hate winter, just like this little boy. But one day a strange spiky figure appears and transforms the boy's world into a winter wonderland! How long will the magic spell last? Kazuno Kohara's distinctive lino-cut illustrations and limited palette provide the perfect counterpart to her spare, witty storytelling in this stylish new picture book with great child appeal.
Review
This was an unusual story, a bit like a traditional fable, but enjoyable to read. It reminded me of The Snowman where the little boy's frosty friend has to leave him in the end.
I thought it might not hold my little boy's attention as there were no bright coloured pictures, its all shades of white, blue and grey. But as soon as we'd got to the end of the story he asked for it again, and in fact again after that! It surprised me he liked it so much, he was especially intrigued at the end where Jack Frost disappears through the trees.
