Synopsis

When John Travis is murdered he finds himself in Inferno, a Hell that takes the form of an endless city alive with corruption, intrigue and despair. Yet being dead is the least of his problems; he is actually Jacamo Terence - dead 800 years and the first man to escape Hell and live his life again.

Review

This is an early work by Mike Carey and it's possible to see why he was so suitable to write Lucifer, and Hellblazer later on. It's extremely inventive and taps deep into the collective mythologies of heaven and hell, and whilst the story is labyrinthine it doesn't confuse.

Inferno explores what makes up memory and personality - something that Carey would re-visit (in a very different form) in Faker, and it's not a story that gives its answers away easily, rather requires at least two readings - but it will reward the pursuant reader. For me the revelation at the end of the story made more sense on the second reading
The artwork reminds me of Kent Williams - especially the work he did on Sandman - and really compliments the story.
