Has there ever been a more extraordinary rock-star story than Ozzy Osbourne's? Born into a life so poor that the whole family slept in one room, Ozzy endured a tough upbringing. Music was his salvation and his band Black Sabbath went on to change the music scene forever. But along with the rock and roll came the inevitable sex and drugs and Ozzy fell into a long relationship with addictive substances. The stories of Ozzy's days on the road are legendary - biting the head off a live bat, losing his best friend and writing partner Randy Rhoades in a tragic plane crash - but few know of the real heartbreak he suffered during those days of excess. In the end it was love that saved him: the love of his wife Sharon and kids Kelly, Jack and Aimee. In his highly anticipated autobiography, Ozzy comes clean: in all senses.
Review
This is a wonderful read - hilarious and honest, brusque and bonkers; detailing the highest peaks and lowest ebbs of the one and only Ozzy Osbourne. After reading it one thing really hits home, it's amazing that he's still with us -I'm sure a lot of people thought that way after seeing him on the reality tv show "The Osbournes", but it's not until reading this that I realised just how much he drunk; snorted; smoked, etc.
What strikes home for me is the honesty of this book. Ozzy doesn't pull his punches, he's perfectly able to admit his mistakes and look back on this life with a semblance of openness. This is a funny read and Ozzy's character shines through, as it did on the series. It's hard not to like the guy, or to enjoy the book.
As a portrait to the other side of fame, this makes compulsive reading as the glam and glamour is stripped away to show a man lost to himself and those around him. It sounds trite, and a little clichéd, but it really was love that saved him - it was Sharon's belief in him that steered him in the right direction before it became too late.
Be warned though, this book does have colourful language.... but then it wouldn't be Ozzy's book if it didn't!!!
