Jacob Hunt is a teenager: brilliant at maths, wicked sense of humour, extraordinarily organised, hopeless at reading social cues. And Jacob has Asperger's. He is locked in his own world - aware of the world outside, and wanting to make a connection. Jacob tries to be like everyone else, but doesn't know how.
When his tutor is found dead, all the hallmark behaviours of Jacob's syndrome - not looking someone in the eye, odd movements, inappropriate actions - start looking a lot like guilt to the police. And Jacob's mother must ask herself the hardest question in the world: is her child capable of murder?

Review
House Rules by Jodi Picoult is an exceptional book about Jacob an autistic teenager with Asperger's Syndrome, and his family - mum Emma and brother Theo, and how they cope when Jacob's tutor is found dead.
As a mother to Naomi who is an adult with autism, I found Jacob's Asperger's Syndrome very true and his reactions and thought processes absolutely spot on - as are his brother Theo's reactions to life dealing with an autistic brother.
What was good to see was Jacob's humour because I know from Naomi that people on the autistic spectrum can have a wicked sense of fun too! But life for mum Emma was hard and how she had the patience to deal with the day to day rituals of Jacob's heaven only knows. This may be a novel but once again Jodi has got it spot on, especially when Rich the detective comes on board and doesn't quite believe that Jacob is as bad as Emma portrays.
House Rules is a brilliant way to portray the many aspects of the autistic spectrum - in this case Asperger's Syndrome. It is an easy to read story that is a real page turner being both informative and enjoyable.
I more than highly recommend this book and look forward to her next one.
