Of all the characters in The Seeing Stone and At the Crossing-Places, it is Gatty the village girl - steadfast, forthright, innocent and wise -- who has won the hearts of readers. This is her story, written down at her behest by her childhood friend and hero, Arthur de Caldicot. Gatty's dream is to follow Arthur to Jerusalem - though she has not even understood that Jerusalem is farther away than Ludlow, and across the sea. As he sets out on the crusade, Gatty, unknown to him, follows. Her extraordinary journey on foot across Europe and towards the east makes a marvellous medieval adventure story.
Review
A wonderful tale of a young girl who sets out on a journey which proves to be a great feat. I would never have considered going on a pilgrimage by horse and boat with no set places to stay. An amazing tale of how a group of people plan and succeed in making a pilgrimage from Wiltshire to Jerusalem.
This is a marvelous picture story of the medieval world, set just after the crusades and the coming together of Christians and Muslims, with the great and the humble arriving at the most important parts of the Christian World in Jerusalem and Bethlehem and how they are looked after by the Muslims and their traditions. But Gatty the young girl has a promise to fulfill and is determined to complete her task and then to return to Wiltshire in England after she has done this duty.
This is a 6 CD set and is suitable for all ages from 8 to 80. I loved it and listerned to it all in one go, completely enthralled by the reader and the writers interpretation of this story
