The first volume in the hugely popular and highly acclaimed epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. There is passion here, and misery and charm, grandeur and squalor, tragedy, nobility and courage. Now a major Sky Atlantic TV series from HBO, starring Sean Bean. Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun. It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lusts and intrigues; to the vast and savage eastern lands; all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men! all will play the Game of Thrones. Winter is coming!
Review
Like a lot of people recently - I came to 'A Game of Thrones' via the TV series, which I watched back to back over a weekend. I had to read the book to see how faithful the TV series had been. I wasn't disappointed - infact I was positively stunned to find that whole scenes and dialogues had been lifted directly from the book!
What has the book to offer over and above the TV series - LOTS. All the little bits that don't get put into the visual, all the asides and the humour with each main character having a chapter to themselves. Although the author jumps around I didn't find the storyline hard to follow, but luckily enough there are geneologies of each family at the back of the book if you get lost as to who belongs to who.
I found 'A Game of Thrones' surprisingly easy to read and even though I'd seen the TV series I found that I was very satisfied with the book. It added to the 'A Game of Thrones' experience and is a book that I most definitely highly recommend.
