Have you ever wondered why everybody these days seems so busy? In 'Finding Sanctuary', Father Christopher Jamison, the Abbot from BBC TV's 'The Monastery', offers practical wisdom from the monastic tradition on how to build sanctuary into your life. In 'The Monastery', the Abbot guided five modern men (and three million viewers) into a new approach to life and this book now offers the reader a similar opportunity. No matter how hard you work, being too busy is not inevitable. Silence and contemplation are not just for monks and nuns, they are natural parts of life. Yet to keep hold of this truth in the rush of modern living you need the support of other people and sensible advice from wise guides. By learning to listen in new ways, people's lives can change and the abbot offers some monastic steps that help this transition to a more spiritual life. In the face of many easy assumptions about the irrelevance of religion today, Father Christopher makes religion accessible for those in search of life's meaning and offers a vision of the world's religions working together as a unique source of hope for the 21st century.
Review
This is a strange book to read but the Audio CD is not only inspirational but also a practical lesson in how to take time out in our busy and confusing modern world.
Abbot Christopher, from Worth Abbey outlines what it is like to live a monastic life, and how when six people from the non-monastic world try to adapt for just three weeks, they find it hard to switch of their mobiles and their computors. It seems that some do not know how to do anything without this technical pieces of equipment attached to their bodies!
He suggests within the discs how some of the old ways of life without modern technology can take you back to the simple life. He gets people to explore the world around the Abbey, the nature and the wildlife the peace and the strengths of this life which can be extended outside the abbey walls.
Richard and Judy of TV fame felt that : "Generous with his insights, but never self-rightous, smug or preachy and his guidance is spot on"
I myself found it uplifiting and a helpful solution to the abominable problems of modern life. I have listened to it on two or three occasions picking out the bits that have most inspired me and with the music at times being the means to reflect and shut out todays crazy world.
