Fables is the hugely imaginative story of a group of fairy tale characters exited from their mythical homelands and forced into a secret existence in modern-day America. Featuring such familar names as Little Boy Blue, Red Riding Hood and Bigby (formerly Big Bad) Wolf, this is hard-edged fantasy in the grand tradition of The Sandman. A journalist is prowling the borders of the Fables' hidden world, grimly determined to expose their community to the world at large. Resolved to prevent this, the Fables hatch a plan so cunning, you could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel! Volume three continues to explore this extraordinary underworld, as related by some of the best creators in the comics industry! Warning: Adults Only!
Review
This is where it gets serious... Although before the main storyline kicks into overdrive we're treated to a delightful short story where Jack Horner manages to overcome Death himself, in order to win his fair sweetheart (or get his leg over, which is more to the point!). This is a story I remember seeing on "Jim Henson's Storyteller", but Willingham's version is much more fun!
The main story is surrounding a mundy (that's an ordinary person like you or me...) reporter who has stumbled on the "truth" as to what the Fables really are, and threatens to expose them. Bigby Wolf must join forces with the very devil, Bluebeard, in order to keep their secret safe. But Bluebeard and Rose Red have got very different plans in store - not only for Bigby, but for Snow White and Fabletown itself...
This is a wonderful, adults only, version of what the fairy tales would be like transposed into contemporary life. Willingham has a great and playful imagination and Mark Buckingham & Steve Leialoha's art is exemplary. There are sequences of a fencing match between Prince Charming and Bluebeard which are exquisite and I'd love to have them hanging on my wall!!
If you like Sandman, and have a yearning for wonderful stories with way-out characters then you'll love this! I did....
