When Riley's Dad gets a new girlfriend, life turns upside down for Riley. She doesn't like Norma and Norma doesn't like her. But it is not until Riley finds herself shipped off to 'camp' that she realises just how bad things have become. Determined to continue on her path of bad behaviour and general obnoxiousness, Riley Rose is sure that she can turn this 'spiritual camp' upside down. And when she meets Dylan Luck, recent paraplegic, she thinks she has found a fellow troublemaker. What follows is a very surprising week for Riley. Truths are told and secrets revealed, and sex, cigarettes and booze prove to be a potent cocktail, but in the end Riley has learnt quite a lot about herself, Dylan and exactly why she appeared hell-bent on self-destruction.
Review
This book is about a a typical family and a typical situation, 'New Mum' (stepmum) and kids don't get on that well with her.
When it all comes to a head Riley Rose as she is called gets sent of to a Christian boot camp and is determined to get away and join the party that her friend is having for his birthday. But Riley discovers during her stay that there is more to life than parties, sex, drink and drugs, although she still likes her smokes!
The banter and the interplay between the characters and Riley at the camp are wonderful.Riley tries to make friends and get to know a lad who thought he was indestructable, but has ended up in a wheelchair and she wants to make his life better. All the characters are of very different dispositions which make them sound just like the normal kids down any street, but some have a bit of a twisted streak which allows for the fireworks that happen between them all, including a food fight which reads as really great fun!
Simmone has written quite a few books but this the first one for me, and I find her writing and the reading of her book, as very well laid out and an enjoyable read.
