Talenth's recovery and the recovery of all the other dragons of Pern is delivered by the unflagging efforts of Lorana and Kindan at Benden Weyr - but their one vital clue is only bought with the loss of all the dragons of Telgar Weyr. Fiona is sent to relieve the distressed weyrfolk of the now-dragonless Weyr. When her queen, Talenth, rises to mate, Fiona finds herself not only Telgar's senior Weyrwoman but in the center of the dilemma that confronts all Pern - how can the one thousand fighting dragons do the job of three thousand? And, if they can't, how long will it be before all of Pern is consumed by Thread?
Review
This is the first of the books written solely by Todd McCaffrey that i have read. I am not sure if it the influence from his mother or the work of the editing team that has produced a book as close in style of writing to the original dragon books by Anne McCaffrey. The story is well written and rounded with very complex charactors that grow all the way through the story. I do feel though that i should have started at the beginning of the dragon riders of Pern series to fully appreciate the nuances of the charactors as there are many references to events that have been told in the previous books. The ending is very open with you feeling that there is a lot more to hear about the various charactors that you have met. This is another great chapter in the ever unfolding tales of Pern, which captivate the reader and draw you in so that you are waiting desparatly for the next instalment. Or even trigger you to go back and read more of the many and varied saga's of Pern again.
