Synopsis

Sookie doesn't have that many relations, so she hated to lose one - but of all the people to go, she didn't expect it to be her cousin Hadley, a consort of New Orleans' vampire queen - after all, Hadley was technically already dead. But she is gone, beyond recall, and she's left Sookie an inheritance - one that comes with a bit of a risk - not least because someone doesn't want Sookie digging too deep into Hadley's past - or her possessions. Sookie's life is once again on the line, and this time the suspects range from the rogue werewolves who have rejected Sookie as a friend of the pack to her first love, the vampire Bill. Sookie's got a lot to do if she's going to keep herself alive ...The Sookie Stackhouse books are delightful Southern Gothic supernatural mysteries, starring Sookie, the telepathic cocktail waitress, and a cast of increasingly colourful characters, including vampires, werewolves and things that really do go bump in the night.

Review

The sixth novel in Charlaine Harris's supernormal romances relating the tales of telepathic human Sookie Stackhouse. This time Sookie becomes involved in the part her her cousin's death plays in the politics of the Queen of Louisiana in New Orleans, and once again her life in is danger.

If one reads the books in order then meeting known characters again adds to the overall satisfaction but if, like me, you are picking this up for the first or second time then it can be irritating to not quite get into the plot for the first few chapters. However, the story line is sufficiently strong to carry the interest.

I do wish that the ideas were dealt with in greater depth - a telepath in a world of vampires, werewolves (and weretigers !) and fairies could be really fascinating. The inter-relationships between the races for instance and why is Sookie a barmaid ? What about using her abilities in crime, or medicine ?

Nevertheless, a great light read.
