Steve Dark is in retirement. Two years ago, as a member of elite crime squad Special Circs, he came close to putting an end to a psychopath's killing spree. But not close enough.
In revenge, the killer destroyed Dark's family. Dark quit, vowing that he'd never go back. He'd seen enough carnage and death.
But now the killer's back. The same psychopath who has shot, raped, maimed, poisoned, burned, strangled and tortured 50 people - the man who took away Dark's family. And Special Circs are convinced that only Dark can stop him.
Is Dark prepared to risk everything - his new life - to once more hunt a monster?
Review
Written by the creator of the TV series CSI:Crime Scene Investigation, this book had a lot to live up to.
It follows a similar theme, with the main character having to track and trace a killer before he harms those closest to him, however it follows police work more than the forensic side of things.
Zuikers' screen writing history is evident throughout, with a very graphic, visually orientated descriptions of characters and places, that change quickly from one'scene' to the next.
The addition of web links to short films every few chapters was a surprising 'extra' to the story, perhaps helping Zuiker bridge the gap between screenplay and novel, however if you cant be bothered to turn on your computer to follow the online additions, you do not miss out by skipping the film. This was a clever development, as if you had had to watch the films to follow the story, it would have become very frustrating to keep going back to the pc.
On the other hand, because of the readers ability to skip the films and still be able to follow the story, to me they seemed a bit superfluous, and did not match up to how the characters looked in my imagination.
For a first novel it is well written and fast paced, although for me personally some of the characters lack depth, and there is a lack of insight into the killers mind and motives. I enjoyed reading it, and would read the second novel, but I was not as gripped by the story as I expected to be.
