In this volume, Blutch and Chesterfield go up in an observation balloon in order to spy on the Confederate troops. But the plot thickens when our heroes crash land on their superiors. The generals send them behind enemy lines to try and free Stark who has been captured on a previous sortie. A tricky mission, not only for our heroes, but also for the other side.
Review
I'll be honest, I'm not too sure what to make of this as it's the first time I've seen the American Civil War treated this way. This is certainly an amusing read and borders on farcical at times, reminding me of Asterix & Obelix in so many ways -but that is probably down to the style of illustration than anything else.
I think the subject matter troubles me - the American Civil War was an incredibly bloody and brutal affair and to see it treated in such a way is a little disconcerting. The humour here is sometimes at odds with its surroundings, and the almost cartoony drawings. There are soldiers being shot in the back whilst the two protagonists are "larking about" in the balloon and it makes me feel uncomfortable.
I'd love to be able to praise this book more: the story is indeed funny; there are some really well timed gags and the art is suitably comical but, for me, it would've been more suited to a different time period.
