Synopsis

What would Gotham City be like without Batman? Legendary writer Grant Morrison (JLA, Final Crisis) concocts an unthinkable plot - the death of The Dark Knight! Bruce Wayne is nowhere to be seen and Batman is acting strangely. A crime spree hits Gotham City, while Batman's allies attempt to keep order in the city and find The Dark Knight. Finally, Wayne is found wandering the streets dazed and confused, unable to remember his alter ego. What has happened to him? And can he recover his identity, or is this finally the end for Batman? This title collects "Batman" Number 676-683 in a new Deluxe Edition. This volume features artwork by Tony Daniel ("Teen Titans").

Review

I don't know how Grant Morrison does it. He's the most talented writer in the comic business and every title he's written on has turned to gold. His work on All Star Superman was nothing less than magical, and his work on Batman has been unbelievable.

Batman - he's over 60 years old, and it would be easy to think that every conceivable story had been written about him. But trust Morrison to get right to the heart of the Dark Knight and show angles and subtleties that we were never even aware of. This story is labyrinthine, but never complicated, and takes the reader right into the heart and very soul of both Batman and Bruce Wayne, and shows the darkest fears and paranoia's that lurk there.

Morrison thinks the unthinkable; shows the unshowable and pulls it off with such aplomb, wit and dark charm that the reader is left breathless with anticipation, craving more, more, more!!! This also has the most menacing Joker - even managing to top Morrison's last attempt in "Arkham Asylum".

Tony S. Daniels artwork is suitably moody and adds so much to the story. It's dark and detailed and conveys the subtleties that Morrison's story demands - but then Grant, like Neil Gaiman, always manages to pick only the very best artists to work with.

I can not wait to see what Morrison writes next - to say that he is a magical writer would be too obvious. He constantly delights and surprises me, and I can never predict what's going to happen next - and for the first time ever, I actually felt afraid for the Dark Knight - I doubted even he could survive what Morrison had in store for him.
