The conclusion of the bestselling Demon War series, which began with Rides a Dread Legion
Recent events have devastated the Conclave of Shadows; the discovery of the Demon horde on the heels of the taredhel invasion of Midkemia, the threat of the star elves themselves, and the terrible personal cost paid by Pug and his family.
But grieving must wait. At a deserted fortress in the Valley of Lost Men, the Conclave's agents witness horror beyond their imagination, orchestrated by a familiar enemy. But Belasco's motives are as yet unclear. The Conclave must regroup and discover the true meaning behind the chaos seeded by the evil magician if they are ever to find a way to stop the destruction of Triagia before the demon horde even arrives.
Review
Pug and his Conclave, both older characters and those introduced in part 1, learn more about the threat posed by the demons to Midkemia. After the costly battle at the end of part 1, they must find a way to stop the magician Belasco and his apparent alliance with demons.
Luckily for me, I had the opportunity to read part 2 straight after part 1, and they do sit together as 2 parts of one story. By the end of the book, I did suspect that we were being prepared for either part 3 or new set of novels. As one threat is defeated, Feist seems to start laying the trail for a new dimension to the old danger. What Pug and his comrades first knew (and the reader) is then revealed as only a small part of something else. I was left wondering what would happen next, but also whether the writer has an end in sight at all...
