The writer and professional controversialist Gustav Slavorigin is murdered in the small Swiss town of Meiringen during its annual Sherlock Holmes Festival, his body discovered with an arrow through the heart. With a price of ten million dollars on Slavorigin's head, almost none of the Festival's guests can be regarded as above suspicion. Except Evadne Mount, of course, the stubborn amateur sleuth and bestselling crime novelist from Gilbert Adair's "The Act of Roger Murgatroyd" and "A Mysterious Affair of Style". Neither of those two cases, however, prepared her for the jaw-dropping twists of this new investigation, which climaxes at Meiringen's principal tourist attraction, the Reichenbach Falls - the site of Holmes' fatal confrontation with his nemesis, Moriarty ...
Review
This is an unusual novel because it is written around a convention for Sherlock Holmes based in a small town in Switzerland: the events that occur are also very bizarre to say the least!
To read about other authors doing Sherlock Holmes seems very strange! All the authors brought together have either plagiarized some of Holmes's work or twisted it into a re-write of the great man, and also many other men and women's crime fiction.
I was fascinated by the intrique and in-fighting between these various authors brought together at the convention, especially how they slag each other off to one another when they think the person they're talking about is not around!
The story line is complicated to say the least and the end was not as expected though I must say that it definitely can fill a niche in todays market. Gilbert Adair has thought his out plot well and planned the words that are written to keep the reader involved from page one to the end by his including a Prologue and the Epilogue. I quite often read them after I have finished the book, but others may prefer to read them in the order they are printed as they both set and finish the story!
