Synopsis

The year is 1777. The place, North Carolina. And as the American rebellion grows in intensity, Highlander Jamie Fraser and his wife Claire need to decide which side their family is going to be on. The choice should be an easy one, given that Claire was born in the twentieth century and has already seen the future - in history books. But things are never simple where the Frasers are concerned, as father and son unwittingly come face to face on the battlefield, and an old adversary reaches forward in time to threaten the next generation. Up to now, Claire and Jamie's love has survived every danger history has put in their path, but in the chaos of war, with families bitterly divided against each other, is the future finally going to catch up with them?

Review

The latest in this fascinating time travel series following Clare, a 20th century nurse and doctor, traveling back to 18th century Scotland and the colonies to be with her now husband, the Highlander Jamie.

Excellent well drawn characters, good dialogue and description, intriguing plots and sub plots, plus interesting detail of everyday life back then, particularly, for me, on the medical/herbal front. Mix in some celtic mysticism, and in this volume some native American wisdom and set in a period of great change, and you have a really good read.

I think you will get more from the book if you bone up on the history - what would you do if you had a foreknowledge of the events and winners and losers in the battle ahead ?

The relationship between the two main characters is almost too good to be true, surviving all sorts of trauma and separation, but it is the main peg of the saga and it is a romance we want to believe in.

The only drawback is the unexpected and dramatic cliff hanger end - how many years will we have to wait to find out what happens next ! The consolation is you may have to re-read the whole series again, which is what I did after finishing this one! Highly recommended.
