Marian Forrester brings delight to her husband, an elderly railroad pioneer; to the small town of Sweet Water where they live; and to Niel Herbert, the young narrator of her story, who falls in love with her as a boy and later becomes her confidant. He witnesses this vibrant woman in all her contradictory facets: by turns faithless and steadfast, dazzling and pathetic, invincibly charming yet dangerously vulnerable to the men she charms. All are bewitched by her charisma and grace - and all are ultimately betrayed. 'This classic has the striking economy of Hemingway, and is as poignant an elegy for the pioneer West as I have read. The vivacious Marian Forrester stands as a romantic paean to the pioneer's reckless abandon, counterpointed by the narrator's prim decency' The Times
Review
This book is about a railway pioneer, in the small town of Sweet Water. Marion Forrester brings delight to her elderly husband, and it is based in the small town of Sweet Water where they live: Neil Herbert who is the young narrator of her story. Neil falls in love with her as a boy and later becomes the person who he confides in. He watches this woman in all facets of her life, through faithless and yet steadfast; dazzling and yet pathetic; invincible and yet she becomes dangerously vulnerable to the men she seems to charm. Every one where they live are bewitched by her charm, charisma and grace - yet all are ultimately betrayed.
"This classic has the striking economy to Hemmingway, and this is one of the most poignant an elegy for the pioneer West as I have ever read." (The Times)
I have to agree with the Times review it was a fascinating a beautifully written story and as I have said before give me more........
